Follow the Yellow Gorse Road
A cycle ride from Land's End to John o'Groats
By John Hopkins and Gordon Leadbeater
It's an epic journey, and considered something of a rite of passage for cyclists – traversing the entire length of Great Britain on two wheels. And John Hopkins, keen cyclist and chartered accountant from Sheffield, took up the challenge in 2004 to ride from Cornwall to the Highlands, accompanied in the saddle by his longstanding school friend Gordon Young.
Whilst thousands make the journey each year, only some share their experiences and tips, yet fewer still share their own take on the places and the people, the history and the oddities that adorn the route of the ride. This book – Follow the Yellow Gorse Road – takes you on John's journey and quest to complete the cycle ride from Land's End to John o'Groats. You'll experience the highs, the lows, the sights and history, without suffering the saddle sores.
This fascinating 129-page book is illustrated with stunning photography from Gordon Leadbeater, Canon photographer and long-term EOS magazine subscriber, who sadly passed away in 2017.
Riding to help others
John's momentous ride covered 992 miles in total and raised an astonishing £11,500 for his two charities: Red Cross and Water Aid. The Derbyshire Branch of the British Red Cross was able to purchase two new defibriliators with the money raised, whilst Water Aid put the funds towards five projects, including the installation of water pumps and public water points, bringing clean water to around 3,000 people in places like Ethiopia and Bangladesh.
Originally available as a printed book, this delightful and very personal tale is now available as an eBook, with proceeds from this eBook continuing to go to John's two chosen charities.
